Eggers uses many different techniques in this passage in order to convey many ideas about the underlying ideas of this story. His main character Will has been struggling to complete his goal of traveling around the world in a week to give away money. This inner struggle gains a moment of clarity with the brief interference of an authority figure in Will's life, his mother. She challenges Will's belief that he has a right to intervene in lives of those he believes he's helping. Will's mom's cynicism throws into question the results of everything Will is doing, while at the same time she plays a parallel role to Hand as being a hindrance to Will's journey, but while Hand plays a physical setback, Will's mom is the emotional setback, or the reality check that Will has been missing while with Hand.

Will's choppy and questioning syntactical answer helps readers to understand that Will's 'god complex' may come from a good place but is shaky and undermines his good intentions.
